Simply put, essential oils are the life force of plants.  They are the aromatic liquids that lie within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds.

Can you just go get them out of a plant in your yard?  Not exactly… They are typically extracted through a steam distillation process, but another common method is through compression.

Are they the same as vegetable and olive oils?  Not at all!  Vegetable oils are obtained from the fatty parts of a plant like the nuts, seeds, or kernels.  Essential oils are usually derived from the roots, bark, flowers, leaves, resin, etc.  Vegetable oils are greasy and can go rancid over time.  Young Living’s essential oils do not go rancid or expire – sweet!  In the essential oils world, we refer to the kitchen oils (olive, coconut, avocado, grape seed, etc.) as carrier oils since they are often used to dilute the potency of therapeutic grade essential oils when applying to your skin.

What do they smell like?  Essential oils should smell exactly like the plant they come from – nothing more, nothing less.  Often times companies will add things like vanillin to make them smell sweeter.  Do your oils smell like a plant or a dessert?  If it says 100% pure but it smells sweet, chances are something else has been added.  This means that the medicinal properties are either decreased or nonexistent.

How do you use them?  There are three ways that you can use Young Living essential oils.  Since Young Living’s oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade, they are safe to use in the following three ways:

        • Aromatically: Use an essential oils diffuser, inhale directly from the bottle, or place a drop in the palms of your hands and cup over your nose.
        • Topically:  Dilute with a carrier oil or apply ‘neat’ to your skin either directly at the source of concern or on the corresponding Vita Flex point on your feet.
        • Internally:  Mix with water or use a clear vegetable capsule to ingest.  NOTE: This can only be done with therapeutic grade essential oils!

Are all of Young Living’s oils compatible with all three methods of use?  No.  There are a few oils that are not recommended for ingestion.  Each individual oil is labeled with the recommended uses and dilution ratio.  Be sure to read this information carefully before using an oil!

Are all brands and types of essential oils the same?  This is a big NO!  Essential oils are categorized by a grading system.  Young Living’s oils are the highest grade – 100% pure therapeutic – making them the best on the market!  Therapeutic grade oils are pure and contain all of the medicinal properties of the oil. Nothing is (or should be) added to them.  Aromatherapy grade is purely for the smell.  It is not recommended to use aromatherapy grade essential oils topically and especially not internally.  Definitely something to think about the next time you are browsing the aisles of your favorite health food store!

What sets Young Living apart from other companies?  The biggest thing is Young Living’s Seed to Seal Quality Commitment.  We highly encourage you to read about it HERE, but there isn’t another company on the market that can guarantee its products like Young Living.  With over 20 years in the field, they have perfected essential oils and the distillation process.  They own many of their own farms, including the largest essential oils distillery in the world.  Their quality truly speaks for itself!

Is there a way I can purchase Young Living oils without going through the company?  This is another huge NO!  There have been a number of recent reports of dishonest people selling what appear to be new, sealed bottles of Young Living essential oils.  Upon closer inspection, the oils in these bottles have been either diluted or replaced with a lesser quality oil and then resealed using a new cap.  PLEASE do not buy oils through Amazon, eBay, or other online retailers. While sites like these are fantastic places to get books and gifts, they are not the place to get essential oils.  You have no way of knowing if those bottles have been tampered with and it isn’t worth chancing to save a few dollars.  If you are thinking about making the investment in your family’s health by purchasing essential oils, please contact the person who referred you to The Oilery or click HERE so we can put you in touch with one of our Young Living Independent Distributors.  They can help guide you through the ordering process and ensure that you are receiving Young Living’s quality products straight from the source!

Are essential oils safe?  Yes, essential oils are very safe.  However, just because they are natural doesn’t mean you don’t need to have a healthy level of respect for their strength and power!  Click HERE to read more about essential oil safety on our blog.
